TYPES OF PLYWOOD AND THEIR USES

Plywood or Ply has become a ubiquitous material in interior design. Home or office owners prefer plywood furniture over timber for its several positive advantages. From structural uses to decorative purposes, plywood is a new favourite for making floors, partitions, doors, cabinets, beds, sofas - the list is endless!

Thin layers of wood are bonded together with an adhesive to make a sheet of ply. The veneers in odd numbers are placed one above the other, and the number of layers determine the thickness of the ply. While the manufacturing process controls the quality of the sheet, the thickness controls the use and application.

Read on to know which type of plywood is best suited for which purposes.

MOISTURE RESISTANT

This is commonly known as MR Grade or Commercial Plywood and is mainly used for interiors. This moisture resistant ply has a very high internal strength and is suitable for making shelves, cabinets, kitchen rooftops, tables and chairs.

BWR PLYWOOD

BWR or Boiling Water-resistant Plywood is, as the name suggests, highly water-resistant. This waterproof ply is suitable for places with high humidity. Warp-free and termite-proof, BWR ply can be used anywhere, be it indoors, outdoors and semi-outdoors.

BWP PLYWOOD

BWP or Boiling Water Proof Plywood resists de-lamination in boiling water for a longer period. It can withstand a high-moisture environment, and its anti-warp properties make the ply stable in dry and wet conditions. Termite-proof BWP ply is mostly used to make kitchen cabinets, doors and cupboards.

BLOCK BOARD

Engineered in a special way, this thick strip of plywood has 19-25 mm of thickness. Block board generally consists of solid wood blocks and softwood strips between two layers of wood veneers. This ensures the dimensional stability of the board. Softwood strips support the board to hold nails and screws better than other boards. Block boards are not likely to bend, so the boards are used to prevent the sagging of thin plywood sheets in tall cupboards and wall separators.

MARINE PLY

Though Marine Ply is often compared with water-resistant or BWR plywood, it has very few similarities. This superior-quality ply has a threshold for water exposure to some extent. As the name suggests, Marine ply is ideal for industries and buildings with high water exposure. So this is preferred for outdoor furniture, benches, cupboards, etc., rather than indoor furniture.
